SubQ Rehydration has potential to be a valuable adjunctive therapy in treatment of children with mild to moderate dehydration. Often children present to the emergency department with symptoms of dehydration which cannot be effectively treated with oral rehydration therapy (ORT) involving 2-5ml sips of electrolyte fluids every 2 to 5 minutes. SubQ therapy should be well tolerated by both pediatric patient and family, when contrasted with multiple sticks often required to gain venous access. I was anxious to try this therapy first hand and was afforded the experience from my friends at Cass Regional Medical Center. Many thanks to the skilled physicians and nurses who assisted me with this video.
